Host—Guest Interactions Involving Cyclodextrins: Useful Complementary Insights Achieved by Polarimetry.
2007
Abstract By means of simple polarimetry, we studied the binding abilities of native α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins toward a group of suitably chosen model guests. We were able to get reliable estimations of the binding constants K, spread over a wide range (from 3.7 to 12,300 M−1), allowing us to carry on interesting comparisons. A comprehensive discussion of polarimetric data, and in particular a detailed analysis of the variations ΔΘ of molar optical activities consequent to inclusion, offered us the opportunity to get useful insights into the structure and dynamic behavior of host–guest complexes.
Carbon Nanotubes Conjugated with Triazole-Based Tetrathiafulvalene-Type Receptors for C60 Recognition
2019
Fullerene receptors prepared by a twofold CuI -catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction with -extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) have been covalently linked to singlewalled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The nanoconjugates obtained were characterized by several analytical, spectroscopic and microscopic techniques (TEM, FTIR, Raman, TGA and XPS), and evaluated as C60 receptors by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The complexation between the exTTF-triazole receptor in the free state and C60 was also studied by UV-Vis and 1 H NMR titrations, and compared with analogous triazole-based tweezer-type receptors containing the electron-acceptor 11,11,12,12-t…
Supramolecular Heteropolyoxopalladate {Pd15} Cluster Host Encapsulating a {Pd2} Dinuclear Guest: [PdII2-{H16-nPdII15O10(PO4)10}]n-
2011
Ahigh-nuclearity polyoxopalladate compound, [PdII2⊂{H7PdII15O10(PO4)10}]9 {PdII17}, comprising a {Pd15} host occupied by a {Pd2} guest and the parent pristine “empty” [H7PdII15O10(PVO4)10]13 {Pd15} cluster have both been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, 31P NMR, CSI-MS, and XPS. The encapsulated {Pd2} has a short PdII PdII distance within the {Pd15} host. Solution studies indicate that the empty host and filled guest complex are in equilibrium with each other, and UV titrations revealed a binding constant of ca. 103 for the guest PdII ions, with a binding stoichiometry of almost 2.
Crystallography of encapsulated molecules.
2017
The crystallography of supramolecular host–guest complexes is reviewed and discussed as a part of small molecule crystallography. In these complexes, the host binds the guests through weak supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen and halogen bonding, cation–π, anion–π, C–H–π, π–π, C–H–anion interactions and the hydrophobic effect. As the guest often shows severe disorder, large thermal motion and low occupancies, the reliable crystallographic determination of the guest can be very demanding. The analysis of host–guest interactions using tools such as Hirshfeld and cavity volume surface analysis will help to look closely at the most important host–guest interactions. The jewel in the cr…
Polarimetry as a useful tool for the determination of binding constants between cyclodextrins and organic guest molecules
2006
Binding constants for cyclodextrin inclusion complexes can be easily estimated by means of simple polarimetric measurements. Determinations are as reliable and accurate as those obtained by means of other more sophisticated techniques, and take advantage by the limited waste of material required. Our results are briefly compared with literature values obtained by means of different techniques.
Host-Guest Interactions of Sodiumsulfonatomethyleneresorcinarene and Quaternary Ammonium Halides : An Experimental-Computational Analysis of the Gues…
2020
The molecular recognition of nine quaternary alkyl- and aryl-ammonium halides (Bn) by two different receptors, Calkyl-tetrasodiumsulfonatomethyleneresorcinarene (An), were studied in solution using 1H NMR spectroscopy. Substitution of methylenesulfonate groups at 2-positions of resorcinol units resulted in an increase of cavity depth by ∼2.80 Å and a narrow cavity aperture compared to Calkyl-2-H-resorcinarenes. The effect of alkyl chain lengths on the endo-complexation, that is the ability to incorporate other than N-methyl chains inside the cavities, were investigated using ammonium cations of the type ⁺NH2(R1)(R2), (R1 = Me, Et, Bu, R2 = Bu, Ph, Bz ). The C−H⋯ interactions between guests …
Binding properties of mono-6-amino-beta-cyclodextrin towards p-nitroaniline derivatives: a polarimetric study
Host−Guest Interactions between β-Cyclodextrin and the (Z)-Phenylhydrazone of 3-Benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole: The First Kinetic Study of a Ring…
2002
The effect of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) on the mononuclear heterocyclic rearrangement of the (Z)-phenylhydrazone of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (1) in aqueous borate buffer at pH = 9.6 has been analyzed at temperatures ranging from 293.15 to 313.15 K. The trend of the absorption spectra of 1 as a function of time has been accounted for with the formation of two different 1:1 complexes between beta-CD and 1, the first, "unreactive" complex being formed faster than the "reactive" one. The occurrence of negative activation enthalpy values for the studied interconversion evidences the kinetic relevance of inclusion processes. Computational models elaborated using the MM2 molecular mec…
